Independence

With my kiddos, we always try to get them to be as independent as possible.  The fewer prompts to do something the better.  They are still rather dependent on all of us adults in the room, but at their age, it's perfectly alright.  I've seen them grow up and become more independent in the last few months and it's scary to think that my first year of teaching is almost over.

I've been thinking about independence in my own life.  I've been thinking a lot about how much I have changed, grown up, and become an adult in the last year.  A lot of my friends are still living the college dream and forget that I go to bed at a rather early time....  *cough, cough Lu-Bird!*

Last year, I had just taken Dustin home to meet the parents.  This year, I'm having bridal showers for our upcoming wedding.

Last year, I was rounding out my last month of student teaching.  This year, I'm rounding out my last couple of months of teaching my first year.  And that in itself has been an astounding adventure!

Last year, there were school bills.  This year, it is rent and a car payment.

Last year, I was worried about what to buy for my classroom.  This year, I still am, but I'm also buying things like a wedding ring, and things for a home.

Last year, I had been dating Dustin for only a few months.  This year, I'll be marrying him real soon!

Last year, I moved 3 times.  This year, I will ONLY MOVE 1 TIME!!!!  This is one that excites me the most!  I'm so done with moving and can't wait to unpack that last box in a permanent place!

Last year, I was still in denial that I would ever begin to lose touch with my closest friends.  This year, I'm realizing how time consuming a job, planning a wedding, and having a small amount of free time to myself eats up any extra time I have.  And sleep is very important!

Last year, I was the one being interviewed.  This year, I was part of an interview on the other side of the table.

I feel myself advocating for myself in such a bigger way than last year.  I'm taking care of things I've never had to take care of before, and I know I can do it!  Given all of the things I've discovered I am able to do and take care of now, I know that I will only learn how to do more as a wife and home maker.  Yeah for independence!  :)
